Ammonium chloride, referred to as ammonium chloride for short, is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula of NH4Cl, which refers to the ammonium salt of hydrochloric acid, and is mostly a by-product of alkali-making industry. It contains 24% and 26% nitrogen, and is white or slightly yellow square or octahedral crystals. It has two dosage forms: powdery and granular. Granular ammonium chloride is not easy to absorb moisture and is easy to store, while powdery ammonium chloride is mostly used as the basic fertilizer for compound fertilizer production. It is a physiological acid fertilizer, which is not suitable for application on acid soil and saline-alkali soil because of its high chlorine content, and is not suitable for seed fertilizer, seedling fertilizer or foliar fertilizer, nor for application on chlorine-sensitive crops (such as tobacco, potato, citrus, tea tree, etc.). Ammonium chloride has a high and stable fertilizer efficiency in rice fields, because chlorine can not only inhibit nitrification in rice fields, but also be beneficial to the formation of rice stalk fibers, increase toughness, and reduce rice lodging and pest invasion.
On October 5, 2023, American scientists discovered the evidence of the sixth basic taste, which is "ammonium chloride".

The aqueous solution is weakly acidic, and the acidity increases when heated. It is corrosive to ferrous metals and other metals, especially to copper, and has no corrosive effect on pig iron. There are two main production processes for this product: one is to produce soda ash and ammonium chloride at the same time by using the Hou's soda process invented by Hou Debang, a famous scientist in China; The second is the by-product of producing potassium salts such as potassium carbonate. Ammonium chloride is easy to agglomerate, and anti-caking agent is usually added to prevent the product from agglomerating.

Colorless crystal or white granular powder is a kind of strong electrolyte. When it is dissolved in water, ammonium ions and chloride ions are separated, and ammonia gas and hydrogen chloride combine to form ammonium chloride, there will be white smoke. No smell. It tastes salty, cool and slightly bitter. The hygroscopicity is small, but it can absorb moisture and agglomerate in wet and rainy weather.
Powdered ammonium chloride is easy to deliquesce, especially for qualified products, and the moisture absorption point is generally around 76%. When the relative humidity in the air is greater than the moisture absorption point, ammonium chloride will absorb moisture and agglomerate easily. It can sublimate (actually the process of decomposition and regeneration of ammonium chloride) without melting point. The relative density is 1.5274. The refractive index is 1.642. Low toxicity, LD50 (rat, oral) 1650mg/kg. Irritating. Heating to 350ºC for sublimation, boiling point 520ºC.
Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, soluble in liquid ammonia, insoluble in acetone and ether. Hydrochloric acid and sodium chloride can reduce its solubility in water, and its solubility in water is 29.4g at 0ºC, 33.2g at 10ºC, 37.2g at 20ºC, 41.4g at 30ºC, 45.8g at 40ºC, 50.4g at 50ºC, 55.3g at 60ºC and 60.2g at 70ºC. It begins to decompose when heated to 100ºC, and can be completely decomposed into ammonia gas and hydrogen chloride gas at 337.8ºC. When cooled, it recombines to generate ammonium chloride with extremely small particles and presents as white smoke, which is not easy to sink or dissolve in water.
PH of aqueous solution: The pH of saturated ammonium chloride solution is generally around 5.6 at room temperature because the ammonium ion ionized in water is hydrolyzed to make the solution acidic. At 25ºC, 1% is 5.5, 3% is 5.1 and 10% is 5.0. Ammonium chloride itself can be used as a stabilizing agent for bismuth and antimony (chloride ion is provided for coordination, and its compound is co-dissolved with ammonium chloride in dilute hydrochloric acid when used).
chemical property
The aqueous solution is weakly acidic, and the acidity increases when heated. It is corrosive to ferrous metals and other metals, especially to copper, and has no corrosive effect on pig iron; When ammonia gas is mixed with hydrogen chloride gas, white smoke will be generated, which is ammonium chloride.
