Ammonium nitrate is an ammonium salt, chemical formula is NH4NO3, which is a white crystalline powder, easily soluble in water, easy to absorb moisture and agglomerate, and absorbs a lot of heat when dissolved. It is an oxidant, which is decomposed explosively by violent impact or heating, and decomposed in alkali, and is mainly used as fertilizer and industrial and military explosives.

chemical property
Pure ammonium nitrate is colorless and odorless transparent crystals or small white crystals, which react with alkali to generate ammonia gas and absorb heat. It is deliquescent and easy to agglomerate. It is soluble in water and absorbs heat at the same time, but also soluble in acetone and ammonia, slightly soluble in ethanol and insoluble in ether.
thermolysis The decomposition products of ammonium nitrate are different with different decomposition temperatures.
At 110°C: NH4NO3→NH3+HNO3 At 185 ~ 200 C: NH4NO3→N2O+2H2O Above 230°C, there is weak light at the same time: 2NH4NO3→2N2+O2+4H2O. When the temperature is above 400°C, it will decompose violently and explode: 4NH4NO3→3N2+2NO2+8H2O.
Pure ammonium nitrate is stable at room temperature and insensitive to impact, collision or friction. However, it will explode at high temperature, high pressure and in the presence of oxidizable substances (reducing agents) and under electric spark. Ammonium nitrate can't explode when the water content is above 3%, but it will still decompose at a certain temperature. Safety regulations must be strictly observed in production, storage, transportation and use.
Mainly used as fertilizer, industrial and military explosives, and can be used as pesticides, refrigerants, nitrogen oxide absorbents, making nitrous oxide, fireworks and so on.
Ammonium nitrate is an extremely insensitive explosive, which is more insensitive than safety explosive C4. An industrial 8# detonator (only 6# can be used to detonate C4) is not enough to detonate ammonium nitrate mixed with sensitizer. Ammonium nitrate is the most difficult explosive to detonate, and its impact sensitivity is: 50kg hammer, 50cm falling height, 0% explosion. Compared with the 200g hammer of the famous explosive nitroglycerin, the sensitivity of 20cm falling and 100% explosion shows the insensitivity of ammonium nitrate. Moreover, once ammonium nitrate is dissolved in water, the initiation sensitivity is greatly reduced, and it is impossible for human beings to impact and detonate.
